Submitted....

I just submitted my application for the DNP program at the U.*
DNP=Doctorate of Nursing Practice
=I will be an NNP
NNP=Neonatal Nurse Practitioner

This wasn't part of my plan
Neither was serving a mission
Or being single at this age
Or becoming a nurse

So the BYU student who failed an entire semester
Because she chose to go shopping instead of take a final
(among other things obviously)
And didn't take school seriously**
Is going to go for a doctorate***

Once again the Lord is in charge
It's all part of His plan
So now it's part of mine

And with the Lord's help I can do this
Because I can't do it on my own

*I'm still waiting for one recommendation
to come in-please pray she'll get it in
by Jan 15th-I'm freaking out here!
**I was much more serious for my nursing
degree. Scarily serious.
***I will insist my family call me Dr. Mills
I mean doctor is in the title

A little of this....a little of that....

I need to blog. I stopped blogging and I stopped writing altogether. No journal entries, no blogging, no anything. It's so sad.

I need to take pictures. I have a camera. I have a cell phone with  camera. I don't take pictures. Unless it's of this guy--->

That's B-Squared, my nephew. Love him. He's cute and he's big and he's loud and he appears to like me, at least he drools on me,  unless his mom is in the room, and then he doesn't like anyone.

I'm on Christmas break. I still call it Christmas break. It's fine. I spent the first half of it nauseated and the last few days of it with a sinus infection that seems to be outlasting my z-pack. I hope this isn't indicative of what the New Year will bring.

My year feels uncertain. I'm applying for school to get a doctorate. I've got a bunch of stuff I need to accomplish this year at work as well. I need to put together a desk. I can't sleep because I have so much to get done but I don't know where to start. How do you write a personal statement?  I state that you should let me in your program because I am great. Does that work?

Diet Coke is no longer my drink of choice. I've had 2 this week and they don't taste good. It's like I don't even know myself anymore!

For now all I do know is that I want to write. And take pictures. And sleep.

Happy New Year.

Numbers......

I feel like I've had a new revelation, or maybe I'm just a little out of it today-but have you ever noticed that everything is in numbers? I guess it's the only way we can quantify and work cohesively in the world with others.

In the morning the first thing I hear is my alarm...5:00am...snooze for 10 minutes...35 minutes to get ready for work. Somehow it's now 5:45. 10 minutes to blow-dry my hair. Forget it, it can airdry. The radio show starts blaring "It's 6am and already the boy ain't right".

6:15, on the freeway. If I'm lucky. 35 minutes to get to work. 15-30 minutes to get report. Fluids running at 12.4 ml/hr. Urine output at 3.6ml/hr. Meds due at 0900, 1400, 1800.  Morphine is 1:1, Fentanyl is 10 to 1. Ativan is 2:1. Multiply, divide, add, subtract.

1330: Pt. irritable, difficult to console, prn ativan given. 1400: pt calm and sleeping.

240 calories eaten for breakfast. 360 at lunch. 900 calories left for the day.

5,657 steps taken so far. 1300 calories left to burn. 1.7 pounds lost this week.

1845 where's my replacement? 19:25, on the road home. If I get there fast enough I can get to the gym by 8:00 (I switch from military to 12hr time in the car). Need to run 3.5 miles for my half marathon training. Home by 9, in bed by 10. Hopefully. Alarm tells me I have 6 hrs and 18 minutes before it will go off in the morning.

Move $200 to savings. Take $100 out for new windshield. $26.77 spent so far this month on groceries. $173.23 left in the grocery budget.

Mortgage is due on Sept. 1st. HOA due on Aug 30th. Bill pay takes 7 days.  Balancing my budget takes 1 hour. Watching Teen Mom takes 42 minutes. Combine to save time.

Enough with the numbers! I'd like to start intuitive living. Not using a clock. Not worrying about time. Sleeping in until I'm rested, going to appointments when I'm ready, not counting money, calories, minutes, days. Living by the arc of the sun and whenever the mood strikes. And of course, if we all did it anarchy would ensue and our entire civilization would cease to function.

But it's a nice thought.

A Bird's Eye View of Neonatal Nursing

So I pretty much hate when people post articles from other sources on their blogs. Drives me crazy. But this article entitled "A Birds Eye View of Neonatal Nursing" I had to post. I'm constantly trying to explain to my family what working in a NICU is like, but in all actuality-you can never know until you are in the thick of it. There are good days and bad days and days you would never wish on your worst enemy. Until you have a job that literally deals in life or death you can never understand the pressure, or the joys, of nursing, especially in an ICU setting. And so, for my family, here's a glimpse:
A Birds Eye View of Neonatal Nursing:
Neonatal nurses are a difficult group to describe. I have a bird's eye view of them, working with them yet not being one of them.
I entered their world cautiously knowing they would eat me for lunch if I so much as looked the wrong way. Forget that I had any knowledge or even a personality. I knew that first I must just exist in their world and do no harm for a very long time, and if that plan worked out, maybe I could start treating some patients. I respected their protectiveness. I couldn't think of any group of patients in greater need of protection.
And slowly, they allowed me to be.
If you've never seen a NICU nurse work it's quite amazing. They can bundle a baby as tight as any burrito in 3 seconds flat, especially if showing a new resident how to properly perform this task. Seemingly regardless of their age and/or eyesight they can start an I.V. in a vein that's no wider than a thread or fishing line while blocking out all surrounding distractions.
And don't kid yourself if you're a friend of one of these nurses and you visit her with your new baby. You may think she's just admiring his adorable face when really she's trying to control her excitement about how good his scalp veins look in case he ever needs an I.V. in his noggin.
I'm telling you, they're just not right.
They are meticulous about the state of the baby's bedside and the baby himself, and are so anal that they typically revamp the entire area when they come on shift because the nurse before them wasn't quite anal enough. This is all in the best interest of the baby of course, and for that nurse's state of mind for the rest of the shift.
They have the ability to discern when a little 1-pound person just doesn't seem like herself from a mile away. They will do everything in their power to convince the docs of this and will likely not let them leave for the day unless they get what they want for that baby.
NICU nurses have known forever that these babies feel pain, even though it was difficult to 'prove'. They think about the babies on their days off, come in from home if they are dying. They provide a baby with lots of love one minute, and run to code another one the next.
They are expert at what they do.
Now that I've been working with them for well over a decade and they trust me not to do anything too stupid, I must say I understand them. This little world in the NICU is unique. It is at once a place of celebrating new life and the grasping for it. It has been noted to be a place of intense parental love or at times abandonment; parents sometimes lost in their own set of horrible circumstances. It is mostly happy. It is mostly positive. It can be devastating.
We tuck years of that pain into a place we pretend doesn't exist in healthcare. We go home and kiss our children.
I can't say enough about the dedication of this group of people. They make me laugh hysterically with the sarcasm and humor that comes with the territory. They stun me with the level of skill they take for granted and the patience with which they teach the unending line of new doctors, new nurses, and people like me.
It is an immense responsibility to dedicate your work to a place that never closes, which needs you for its smooth and competent running, where fragile babies living and dying can just be part of your day's work. All of that for a six figure salary............
Thank you to the NICU nurses, for your expertise, your example, and your friendship. May there be a place in heaven for you with a coffee pot, good Chinese food, and the perfect schedule!

Comment on Public Transportation.......

I have to admit something.

I have a fear of public transportation. I know, it sounds stupid, but it is real. It started when I took the bus to BYU from my grandma's house. I made it to BYU just fine, but I got confused on where to get on the bus for the way home, and I ended up out at UVSC for 2hours. I called my mom (who was staying in UT for a week to make sure I got settled) but she wouldn't rescue me. She was too busy at the pool with my cousins. Eventually I made it home, but the damage was done.

The next time I used public transportation was when I came down to SLC from Pocatello to do some clinical shifts at Primary's. They had just made some rule that students couldn't park in the parking garage, we had to take Trax. I was terrified. It was almost enough to keep me from doing clinicals, and when I say almost I mean the thought crossed my mind more than once, what am I doing? I called the UTA hotline to go over my route several times. I made it to and from the hospital but not without having a major panic attack on the way home (i was afraid I'd take the wrong train and end up in Ogden, It could happen!). I only took Trax a few times. Once I got hired for my job I immediately got my parking pass and drove to the hospital for the remainder of my clinical shifts.

Fast forward to now. I've worked at Primary's for 5 years. More and more of my co-workers are using Trax since the gas prices are higher, it's cheaper, you can read or relax on the way to and from work, etc. I've been against it, but now that I'm working more day shifts I think I might try it. I'm completely freaked out of course, but if I can save some money and read more books than why not?

Hopefully I won't get killed or lost.

Pray for me.

Seriously......I cook, therefore I struggle to blog

I can't believe I haven't blogged since JULY. That is embarrassing. Well, I am going to be blogging more often-blogging the recipes I've been trying so my mother can see how they're made and start cooking healthy recipes for her and my dad. Also, I'm sure I'll have some comments to add as well.

My debut recipe is Crock Pot Italian Turkey Meatballs. I found the recipe on www.skinnytaste.com, which I found via Pinterest. But I tweaked it a little to make it more flavorful (in my opinion).

So here are the ingredients:

Meatballs:

  • A pound or so of lean ground turkey (93% fat free at least)
  • 1/4 cup whole wheat seasoned breadcrumbs, or regular bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup parmesean  cheese, grated
  • 1/4 cup parsley, finely chopped (use fresh parsley)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 large clove garlic, crushed
  • 1 tsp kosher salt + fresh pepper
The Sauce:
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, smashed
  • 28 oz can crushed tomatoes or pureed tomatoes, I used 1 of each
  • 1 bay leaf
  • salt and fresh pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup fresh chopped basil or parsley (I did 1/4 cup of each)
  • Sauteed Mushrooms-as much as you'd like, I think I used 3 cups
  • 1/2 white onion, chopped finely
First of all, i put together the ingredients for the sauce. I put the tsp of olive oil (I actually used a little more) in a saute pan and browned the garlic, which I then added to the cans of tomatoes in the crockpot. I then sliced the mushrooms and sauteed them in a little olive oil and salt and pepper and added them as well. Finally I chopped up the onion and the basil and parsley. I only had about 3 hours before I ate so I put the crockpot on high, but you can put it on low and cook it longer. The longer you cook it the more flavorful it will be.

Then, I preheated my oven to 350. I put all of the ingredients for the meatballs together in a large bowl, and mixed it together with my hands. Yes, I was grossed out but it was the best way to mix everything. You better believe I sanitized EVERYTHING when I was done. Yuck.

I placed some tin foil on my cookie sheet (so I wouldn't have to wash it later), spraying the tin foil with pam so that the meatballs wouldn't stick, and, once again using my hands, made the meatballs. I used about 2 tablespoons of meat for each meatball. The website said not to make the meatballs too tight or else they'd be tough, so I just made sure they were stuck together enough to not fall apart and called it good.

I baked the meatballs for about 20 minutes and then added them to the sauce. I then let the sauce simmer for about 2-3 hours before I was ready to eat it.

You can use this as a spaghetti sauce, but I chose to do an open-faced meatball sub. I toasted 2 pieces of french bread, then placed 2 meatballs on each slice, placed 1/2 slice of provolone cheese on each piece of bread, melted the cheese in the oven, then added a little more sauce and it was ready to go.

And now, pictures:
                                          The meatballs

                                          The sauce, without the meatballs

The sauce with the meatballs in it

The provolone cheese ready to be melted

The finished product, with a little more sauce and
                                           more cheese (More CHEESE!)

I loved this recipe, it didn't take long at all to make and it tasted great. I can't wait to try this with spaghetti noodles.

Comment on compliments.....

I love Jillian Michaels. Who wouldn't love to have her kick your butt like she does to the contestants on The Biggest Loser? I would!

So when her latest book came out I decided to read it. I didn't realize it was a full-on self-help book but it is. I decided to read through it and found this little gem that reflects my feelings on receiving (and giving compliments):

Compliments are without a doubt one of the easiest and quickest confidence-boosters out there.    And yet for some reason the first thing most of us do when we receive one is to deflect it. I like your hair. "Oh, thanks. I couldn't do anything with it this morning." I like your sweater. "Oh, thanks. I'm not sure it goes with these pants." I like your pants. "Oh, thanks. I got them on sale."

Seriously, get over it and take the damn compliment. Even if you don't believe it, or you think it's been given out of some ulterior motive-just say thanks and accept it, own it.

On the flip side of this, giving compliments is another great way to project your own confidence to those around you. By giving compliments freely and genuinely, you are sending the message that you are comfortable with and enjoy other people's strengths.

Thank you Jillian! There's nothing more annoying than when you compliment someone and they downplay it. If someone compliments something you did or how you look-own it! I've been working on this the last few years and it's fun to actually appreciate the compliments I get rather than feeling like I need to excuse it away. If you struggle with this-try it!

Just a thought :)

Comment on Bossypants.....

I laughed, I cried from laughing, it was better than, well not better than Chelsea Handler's "Are You There Vodka, It's Me Chelsea", but I didn't have to edit so much and could actually read all of it. If you like Tina Fey read this. It's fabulous. I've also been watching 30 Rock on Netflix. Speaking of which-why do they keep raising the prices? Maybe they need an open letter. But I've enjoyed 30 Rock more than I thought I would. It's pretty funny as well.

Anyway my point is....

Tina's great.

Enjoy.

Comment on Kenny 2011......

Oh, Kenny......

You missed us last year, but came back this year and didn't disappoint.

This year the Kenny concert was epic. Mostly because of our seats. We've been close before, but when we bought our tickets, I didn't realize just how close we were. Probably because I woke up in the middle of a sleeping between night shifts to purchase said tickets. After realizing how close I was I realized I might actually be able to rush the stage. Unfortunately, due to bad weather, I left my cowboy hat at home. So I bought a kenny hat for him to sign. I was just that sure.

Anyway DJ and Jenny and I had tickets together, just a row up from Lisa, Steff and Em. It was fantastic. Unfortunately we were in the middle of a group of ladies who were there for the party. Fortunately for us, the ladies wanted to sit together, so they switched seats with us, putting us closer to the aisle and right in front of our cousins, so that they could all be together and not have a group of party poopers (sober people) in between them. In the words of Jenny, it pays to be lame. DJ and I perpetuated the theory that we were lame by staying seated all during Uncle Kracker and Billy Currington. We didn't want them to get the idea that we were actually going to be fun during this concert and then renig on the switch.

Things got even better for us when the dudes now next to us, who wanted to party with the chicas, decided to switch seats with us in a deal brokered by DJ. All the young lad had to say was, "we don't want to stand in the way of you guys getting lucky tonight", and the seats were switched. That put us right on the aisle and in prime location to have my hat signed by K-Chez.

The concert was great. I got fantastic pictures and even ran up closer periodically to get better shots until the bouncer would make me go back to my seat. Seriously, he did a good job of keeping some people away, but mostly he was a total douche bag. We watched him throughout the entire concert and he was just plain mean for the fun of it. Fortunately, at the end of the concert when Lisa and I were up taking pics, he went to go throw someone else out and we were able to dodge our way up to the stage which is how I got my hat signed. As soon as I saw Kenny walking over to our side of the stage with a marker in hand I ducked and pushed my way to the stage and stuck my hat out there. He looked at it, grabbed it and signed it and then went down to the next group of people. It was the best ever!!! I thanked him, but I'm sure he didn't hear it haha. Anyway I can't wait for next  year. His concerts are seriously awesome!! Love Kenny!!!

And here are a few of my favorite pics:

DJ, Jenny and I in the midst of seat changes

There's always laughter with us

One of the party girls

The row of true religions getting all up in DJ's business

That's just how close we were folks

We were in a constant beer lake

The crowd behind us

Kenny's arm looks hot! Also those are some great IV veins!

The douche bag bouncer-I don't even remember getting this pic!

Right after dodging my way to the stage

He signed it!

An open letter to Usana......

Dear Usana,

I've been a concert attendee at your venue for years now. Last week's Kenny Chesney concert was not my first rodeo, nor was it yours. And yet, there are problems that one would think you'd try to fix, and yet year after year, you don't.

The problem I'm referring to is your parking lot. Getting in and getting parked goes rather smoothly. You have plenty of parking attendants to help guide us into our spots. This year we even used the Carpool lot. It was great.

My question is-Why does it take at least 1.5 hours to get out of the lot YEAR AFTER YEAR? Where are all of those helpful attendants after the show is over? Thanks to the long wait we had people were literally peeing outside their cars:

yes, this is real. And it wasn't the only pee-er we saw
This was literally the scene of the parking lot for over an hour. No movement. Do you think this is a problem? If not, why? Why won't you fix this?

After who knows how long a concert attendee actually got out of his car and started to direct traffic. That helped until his car got through and he stopped. Maybe you can take a clue from him and actually have people out there directing traffic rather than the 2 cops who are monitoring the exits.

You can't see the dude but he was out there and it was fantastic.
In short, Usana, we all hate you. We do. You're parking lot is just a means to an end for us to be able to see the concerts we wait all year for. But don't think we don't dread what we have to go through to be entertained. I'd like to see our concert fees actually go towards something useful like providing attendees with a complete arrival to departure satisfactory experience.

Please look into it.

A citizen's arrest.....

Dear Greasy Gym Man,

I know you like to come to the gym classes. I'm not faulting you for that. HOWEVER, when you dress for the gym, keep one thought in mind. Wearing white mesh shorts with colored, saggy, fruit-of-the-looms underneath is not a good look. For anyone. Please take this into careful consideration and make the necessary changes.

Sincerely,

The Girl On The Bench Behind You*

Comment on a little twilight.......

Not that Twilight.....

This twilight:

Tonight I had a rare evening where I wasn't working and didn't have plans, so I decided to go for an evening jog. I love jogging in the evenings, yet I haven't done it since summers when I lived in Provo. I went every night back then-jogged from my apartment by Provo High, up around the Provo Temple and back home. It was the best way to spend summer evenings.

Tonight I listened to General Conference while I jogged, until the last 20 minutes or so when I had a nice long talk with my Heavenly Father about some things I need to do. It's the best way to pray I think. It's quiet, no distractions, just the rhythm of my feet on the pavement and my breathing. I thought about how great it is that I can listen to the words of the Apostles of Jesus Christ whenever I want, and how amazing it is that what I heard tonight is exactly what I needed to hear.

I can't wait to go out again.

Testing.....

So I bought an Android a few months ago. And I'm so glad I did. There are so many apps I never knew I needed but now can't live without!

Including this Blogger Droid app which allows me to blog from my phone. Which I'm doing right now....

So what apps do you love that I absolutely must have??

Comment on my birthday.......

Today is my birthday. I'm not dwelling on age-but I am noticing I'm starting to notice a few age-related issues:

I missed my cousin's baby shower because I thought it was next week-a sure sign of dementia

The candles on my cake about set off my aunt and uncle's smoke alarms

When I blew out said candles I missed a few and afterwards was winded from the effort

I ate too much today and therefore won't be able to sleep, which I'll complain about tomorrow as I chug down my prevacid

My friend called to tell me happy birthday, thought I was only 34 instead of 35. When I corrected her she realized now she's turning 36 this year and she got off the phone all depressed (oops)

It took 2 people to light the candles folks

Gearing up for the big blowout

Blowing all the wind out of my sails

My most favorite ice cream ever

Lisa, Pat and Steffy P

Em

The tremendously good cake and ice cream
Thanks everyone for making my birthday fabulous! And thanks to Skype I was able to spend some time with my family long distance as well!

Comment on the latest perfume I'd never admit to wearing.........

I purchased this month's Lucky magazine (Lauren Conrad is on the cover and I love her) and inside was something unexpected.

A sample of this perfume:

Which smells really good -kind of along the same lines as the Escada summer perfumes that I love.

Unfortunately the sample was accompanied by this picture in the ad:

That's right. It's a Justin Bieber perfume. A prepubescent boy has his name on this perfume.I can't spend money on that. Could you imagine telling people you're wearing The Bieb?

However if someone just happened to give it to me I wouldn't throw it out if you know what I mean. I just wouldn't admit what fragrance it is.....

Comment on getting a little bliss.....

Ok, so this picture from google is pretty pixelated, but oh well. I think you get the gist. Bliss Poetic Waxing kit from Sephora (and anywhere else you can find it) is FABULOUS. It's a little pricey, but I've been using it weekly on various areas on my face ( I hate hair on my face ) and it isn't even half gone yet. It has revolutionized my life. It's also really simple to use. It's one of those waxes you peel off without using muslin strips. I LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

Maybe you will too.

Comment on Utah's Greatest Contribution.....

If you are one of those people whose life is constantly busy and filled with purposeful activities from sunup to sundown you probably haven't been watching The Bachelorette. Or actually maybe you are but you like to make other people think you don't have time for that drivel. Whatever. I don't believe you. I'm a faithful watcher. It's fine.

The last 2 seasons of Bachelor/Bachelorette have really put Utah on the map with Michelle "it was all editing" Money and her antics with Bachelor Brad:

And then this week's douche baggery provided by Bentley "I wish she was Emily but I'd still fool around with her" Williams on The Bachelorette:

The wise powers that be at ABC have wised up to our craziness out here in Zion and have announced a Bachelor/Bachelorette casting call in SLC on June 11th at the Peery Hotel.

I won't be there. I'm too normal. And properly medicated.
